The Chaplain and the Social Worker Even if we disregard the opinion of those who believe that the most important function of a chaplain in a mental hospital is to run the patients' library, I think we must admit that a chaplain's duties are such that he must perforce be very much involved in attending to the social needs of patients and staff. I should feel sorry however, for the newly appointed mental hospital chaplain who feels he can easily create a functional niche for himself in social activities, for there are many and quite unexpected forms of opposition and vested interests in the way.
